I wanted to take a few moments to talk about Google’s decision to discontinue the sale of Urchin and frame up what that means for those of you currently using the software.
Let’s start with the facts. Urchin will no longer be available for partners to resell as of March 28, 2012. So, your option right now is to continue using the version of Urchin you have, upgrade to the newest version to be completely up to date, or simply look at other options. While Urchin will not be shut down for you, there will no longer be updates made to the software. Stratigent is happy to help you decide the right approach for your business and introduce you to other options if you need an on-premise analytics package.
Google is working on a new system to allow clients to re-activate existing license keys for Urchin, and in the interim Stratigent can help you execute on that while you are waiting for that system to be released. Why is that important? Once you install Urchin, you can’t move it to a new server instance without re-activating the license key.
Now that we have the facts laid out there, let’s talk about potential future implications. There are two high-level issues in my opinion:
1. Urchin will no longer be updated, yet your requirements are going to grow and your needs will change.
2. While there is “no set end date” for the re-activation server once it’s in production, Google can choose to shut that down eventually.
So, I have some recommendations for those of you using Urchin. I would not look to upgrade Urchin to the newest version if you’re currently on 6 or earlier. If you’re on the newest version, stick with that for now and take some time to think about your business requirements for the product. I would focus on ensuring you have Urchin on the server you’d like to keep it on and ultimately look at other options for the long term solution. Again, we can help you with that. There is nothing to panic about, and Stratigent is here to help you make the right decisions for your business. We are committed to your success in analytics.
